Tax Investigation Services

Protect yourself from costly Tax Investigations

While no one can predict when HMRC might open an enquiry, having the right protection in place ensures you’re fully supported if they do. Our tax investigations service provides expert representation and financial peace of mind, so you can focus on what matters most - running your business with confidence.

Rising HMRC Compliance Activity Recovers £48bn in 2024/25

In 2024/25, HMRC recovered £48 billion through 333,000 compliance investigations, a sharp increase from £41.8 billion the previous year and a clear indicator of its continued drive to raise revenue through enforcement activity.

Notably, 93,000 HMRC enquiries resulted in a nil settlement, meaning no additional tax, penalties, or interest were due. This is up from 82,000 in the previous year. Despite a nil settlement, these cases still generated an average of £2,800 in professional fees for individuals and businesses navigating the enquiry process.

While some enquiries are limited to a specific aspect of a tax return, others can quickly broaden into detailed examinations of a person’s or organisation’s full financial affairs. These investigations can be time consuming, disruptive, and costly, even when taxpayers have done nothing wrong and no further tax is ultimately payable.

HMRC Investigations

On average, tax enquiries take around 18 months to resolve and you may be selected for a detailed review of your tax affairs - even if you’ve done nothing wrong. Without proper protection, this process could lead to additional professional fees to resolve.

That’s why we recommend joining our Tax Investigation Service. With HMRC increasing the volume and scope of its enquiries, more taxpayers are finding themselves caught up in the process. Our service is designed to shield you from the professional costs and provide expert support should HMRC come knocking.

What happens during an investigation if you get an enquiry?

If HMRC decide to investigate you must comply with their requests.

HMRC will check your accounts, request a plethora of documentation, ask lots of questions and may even want to visit you in person. No additional tax may be due, but you will still be left with enquiry fees which could cost thousands.

Investigations are costly, stressful, and an unwelcome distraction from day-to-day life; whether HMRC initiate a Full Enquiry of your tax history or an Aspect Enquiry into a specific area of your return, you will be liable for the professional costs to bring about a prompt resolution.
